STEWARDS AT SHOWS.
Commenting on the appointment 'of stewards iu attendance upon judges acting in connection with' the HawkoV Bay Agricultural and Pastoral, Society's recent show, the Aapier, "Daily Telegraph" says the sys- ' torn might bo improved upon. ', "The position of steward is one 1 that should be held by the young farmer 'classes:- These.- while attending,.the judges in their work,- would pick up information useful td them as farmers and qualifying them to act as. judges f'l ii° tutm '°- Then-general training would tit them 'to 1 absorb such 'information more readily than if' they belonged to other classes and this .would be useful to them not only in their, capacity as farmers, but would tend to provide a good supply of judges. Ihis does not seem to have been thought of in the. appointment of : tho stewards acting-at-the .last show.: Clerks; land agents, and. dontists aro useful members of the body politic, but there is. nothing in their occupations to specially fit. them to act. as stewards." Continuing it says: "Not quite pertinent to. the question' of. judging and judges' stewards,' but. yet'of miicli importance ,is that of-the' comparatively poor encouragement, given to.the small farmer to exhibit.; miat is the reason, for example, why the small farming classes'fail to attract exhibits from olsowliere than the immediate vicinity ol Hastings?''.lf we compare the prizes 'for dairy cattle' and farmers' .stock' with "those for saddlo horses'and hunters, perhaps a: cluo may be found?"
