"AMBULANCE SATURDAY."

Some interest lias been aroused by the announcement of "Ambulance Saturday," on November 2, and attention has been drawn to the Association promoting the movement. The public are probably not as fully posted in: the benefits of the St. John Ambulance Association as they might be. The organisation sets out the following as its objects :— (a) The instruction of persons in rendering first aid in case of accidents or sudden illness, :, and'in the transport of the sick and injured; (b) tho instruction of porsons in the elementary principles and practice of nursing, and also ventilation and sanitation, especially of a sick room; (c) tho manufacture and distribution by sale or presentation of ambulance material, -and the formation of ambulance depots in mines, factories and other centres of industry and traffic; (d) the organisation of ambulanco corps, invalid transport corps and nursing corps; (e) and generally the promotion of instruction and carrying out works for. the relief of suffering of the sick and injured in peace and war, independently J class, nationality or denomination. , The unostentatious manner in which the work of the Association has hitherto' been carried on accounts for the lack of knowledge of tho averago citizen concerning it. The value of the Association's system of "First Aid to the Injured" is beyond question, and tho English Board of Trade has recently recognised the status of "First Aid" certificates by making their possession compulsory before a msistor or mate's certificate can be obtained. It is the desire of tho Wellington centre of'the Association to moro adequately meet the demands made upon it. Up to the present valuable work has boon done, but tho committee,.consider much more would' bo possible with" hotter equipment, which, of course, requires funds. It is in the care of tho sick poor moro particularly that the necessity for extension. is desirable. This is the chief work of the Association at present, its conduct being under the control of the Nursing Guild Division, of which Mrs. S. A. Kho'ies is president. The motto of the Association, "Pro utilitate hominum" (service in the cause of man") is one that might be remombored on "Ambulance. Saturday."
