The JMarylebonc team of cricketers opened their Australian tour to-day in a match against Western Australia. Although the majority of the members of the team showed the effects .of the voyage, several managed, in view of the weak bowling of the homo side, to make fair scores. Fane was the chief of these, and, after, playing himself in, gave an aggressive display, which resulted in 133 being placed opposite his name. His innings, however, was not without blemish. He was given a life at 24, and another ono after recording his- century. Braund played up to. form, whilo both Ilardstaff and Crawford gave a lively exposition. ■ When stumps were drawn, England had lost sevun wickets for 350. The chief scorers were: Fano , .' 133 1 Braund 59 Hanlstaff • 46: Jones (captain) ..................... 45 Crawford 43 The English cricket team is made un of three representatives of Surrey, three of Kent, two of Notts, and one each of Somerset, Sussex, Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Essex, and Staffordshire. Young (Sussex), age 21.—A stylish batsman; a good field in the country; sometimes keeps wicket; wears spectacles. ..Mr. J. N. Crawford (Surrey), age 20— Contemporaneous with Mr. Young at Ileptou, and also weal's glasses; a great cricketer, firstclass in all three departments—batting, bowling (medium pace), and fielding. ; Mr. K. L. Hutchings .(Kent), age 21-.—Ono of the most brilliant batsmen.of the time. Can bowl a good fast ball, and scarcely ever misses a catci. .1. B. Hobbs (Surrey), age 24— A minor Hayward in batting,,and a vastly improved field; was formerly also" a useful bowler. L. G. Hayes (Surrey), age '30—A dashing bat, fine slip field, and a remarkably • useful slow bowler of the "leg-break-keep-down-runs" tyne. Failed in South Africa. ,L. C. Braund (Somerset), age 30.—A seasoned .international. Steady bat and a bowler of any sort that may be required. S. F. Barnes (Staffordshire), age 30.—Mr. A. C. Maclaren's protege. Medium pace bowler; with deceptive swing; can bat a bit. Did well in. Australia till he contracted a "knee." 'J. Humphries (Derbyshire),. age 31.—A good wicket-keeper mid a moderate bat. C. Blythe (Kent), age 28.-Pcrhaps the best slow left-hand • howler in the country. Did well, both 'in Australia and South Africa. Sometimes gets runs. A. Fielder (Kent), age 29.—Assisted Mr. Warner to bring hn.me the ashes. Took* all ten Gentlemen's wickets for ,tho ; Flavors at Lord's. A great fast bowler; gdod No. 11 batsman. ' J. Hardstaff'(Notts), age 21.—A rising bats-man-and a likely success in Australia. Fine field. W. R. Rhodes (Yorkshire), age 29.—Once a great left-hand bowler; now a fine bowler and fine bat; always a sale field. One of the hading cricketers of the era.
