Mr! 11. 11. Stephens was voted to the chaii\' Messrs. Crab'b and Fowler,; chairman and representative of the Kimbolton Railway League, wore also present. ' An interesting report favonr.ible to the extension was read.- Tlie report was written by the-Engineer-in-Chief (Air.: R.' W. Holmes) in 1903. It gives these particulars;—" Feilding is a town, situated on the through line of railway between Foxton ami New Plymouth, about one. mile north of the Oroua River. Apiti is a township situated, on a higb/Tc'r---race, one milo', south of the Oroua River, about twenty-four miles higher up. The country between these two towns; and tho land surrounding them is. of first-class quality, suitable for all classes of agriculture. There are. no largo holdings, :as, are, known,' in Hawke's'..Bay;', and Uiinterbury, and the climate is excellent. Kimbolton and Chetr ■, tenhariiare two small townships situat'ed;;betwetni Feikling and. Apiti, the pup being eiglitebn miles and the latter eight, miles ■ from Feikling. ,'Tho whole of tho country couth-east' of Feilding—i.e., towards Apvti, was originally covered with forest. Now the groat bulk of it has, disappeared, but round Apiti there still remains sufficient timber to produce a considerable revenue for the railway, but owing to the long road carriago it does not at present pay lor cutting.-.'fhe ■principal sources of revenue 7/ould be tho car-l-iago of sawn timber, firewood, dairy produce, sheep, would-root and cereal crops. On tk-i whole, I consider that the lino would nrove a valuable feeder for'tho preso:it main lino." ._ Mr. Holmes-made np the following estimate of the cost of the lina from Feildihg to Cheltenham,'-eight'miles, at £3500 a mile, £28,000; Cheltenham to two and a half mile point; (seven-and a 'half at £6000), £45,000; -two 'and a .half mile point to eii'd (four and a half miles at £10,000), £45,000.; total cost (twenty miles at £5900), £118,000!
