The fortnightly meeting of the City Council was held last night.. Thero were pre- . sent: His Worship tho Mayor (Mr. T. W. Hislop), and Councillors Luke, Ballinger, Cohen, Smith. Hales, Shirtclilfc, Biss, Fletcher, Cannicliael, M'Laren, Morrah, Fisher, and Godber,. 1 •? ;. Tile ( Baths and City Reserves Committee' recommended:—That tho proposals of tho Upland Estate Company with reference >o ■ tho formation of Glen Road at the Botanical Gardens bo approved, subject to tho recommendations of tho Engineer, and provided the ■.Company maintains tho proposed work for a period of months; and reported: '- That tliey had received-'a deputation from tho Wellington Cricket Association, who requested— (a) That all applications for usa ~, of ■ tho 1 Basin Reserve be referred to- tho -': Cricket Association; (b) that automatic re'gistering turn-stiles bo installed at tho entrance gates _ at tho Basin Reserve; (c) that tho'Council.should receive 5 per cent. of the net, and not of the gross, takings; (d) -- that, tho',height of the fence around the.;Basin. Roservp should be increased!— The ... Committee recommended' that the requests bo not granted. That 1 they-had considered ' the. matter, of Mr.-. Guthrie's , lease of sec- : tions, Town Belt, and beg.to recommend as -. follows: That, as a full settlement,''Section'.l 20 be resumed by the Council, Mr. Guthrie • to be paid tho sum of £60, and to be. granted a lease of . Section 23, and such part I of 22 as is. not required for recreation '. ground, at an annual rental of £32' 3s. 6d. That they had considered the application of residents of Goldiosbrae to have the roatl through Queen's Park opened for public traffic, and, having visited the site, recommended that the request bo granted, subject ' ; to tho petitioners agreeing to contribute the ; sum of £20 towards the cost of .fencing required. In moving the adoption of the report, Councillor; Luke stated that the Committee' ' had every sympathy' with the desires'of . tho i Cricket Association to obtain full control of .V a ground, but could not isee its way to allow control of the Basin Reserve to pass out of ' . its hands during tho summer mouths, as it considered thattlie claim of the public was paramount. Bowling and tennis clubs had acquired grounds of _ their own, and' it was [ hoped that, in ' tho interests of cricket, the ' 1 Association would do likewise. , •

Tho By-laws and Street Lighting Corw . mitteo recommended That two lamps bs. . erected in Duppa Street,- provided that a i proportion of the-cost of erecting.the poles.', bo charged to private lighting. That a lamp bo erected in Daniel Street, as recommended : by'tho Electrical' Engineer.' That tlio petition from the Wadestown residents < asking. . that Beauchamp Street be taken over by. tho Council be not granted. That permission bo- granted-to tho Palace. Building Syndicate, , to "erect a'balcony on their building, subject' to the conditions imposed by the.City Engl-; ' ■ neer,. and that, their application. >to erect standards thereon be refused. That permission bo granted for the erection of a building at tho corner of Ghuzneo and .Willis Streets, in accordance with amended submitted, and subject to the recommendations of the City Enginocr. ■ .. ■ , . : Councillor M'Laren moved that tho.clause , rolating' .to :thev A application iof ; the -Palace Building Syndicate be, referred back to the Committoo. This. was rejected; and tho re- , port, as a, whole, was adopted. . . ' • Tho Finanpo and Property, Committee 1 re-M,I commended That permission be granted .to ' tlie Corporation ■ employees to ' nold their ; annual picnic on Saturday, November 23. That the cost of tho Miramar tramway con-: struction within the city boundary, as reported by the City; and. Electrical Engineers, and agreed to by the Miramar Borough Council at £10,52D : i05., be confirmed. That , tho quarry in tho Onslow BorOugh bo taken■■■■'over by the city "at a cost ot £279 10s., and " ■ that tho Council accept no liability with regard to the amount expended in 'litigation .with rofcrenco to the Highland Park rbads. iTho report was adopted. „ Tho Legislation and' Leaseholds Committee ; that, the uso of a light well, •30ft. by Bft., bo., granted "to Messrs. A. Tho Power Stations' and Tramways Committee recommended: —That'ten motors and the necessary gear b'o ordered from 1 tho Australian General Electric Company.' That a tramway 'pass bo granted to the agent of tho Auckland Institute for the Blind and ! his' guide while with him. That the' committee •be authorised to, call for tenders for cable for, power supply. That'any suggestions irom men in the service, if found to bo workable and adopted,, be suitably', rewarded.
