BROOKLYN WATER-WORKS.
'' OPENED ItY THE MAYOR. Tho. Brooklyn water-works, connecting tho suburb with the city water supply, wero opened yesterday by tho Mayor of Wellington (tho Hon. T. W. Hislop), in tho prescnco of a number of Councillors and others. The Sarty consisted of the Mayor, Councillors 'l'.' allinger, J, Smith, J. IV Luke, D. M'Laren. W. H. Hales, J. Godber, W. H. Morrah, and R. Fletchor, the Town Clork (Mr. J. H. Palmer), City Enginoer (Mr. W. H. Morton), Wator-works Overseer'(Air. J. Dimes), and Messrs. J. C. Russell arid, Buswell (of the electrical engineering department), who carried out the electrical work in connection with the pumping. The pumping plant is ejected at tho. head of Epuiii Street, :tho plant consisting of a Mathor and Piatt multi-stage turbine pump (suppliod by Palmer and Co.) and an electric motor, which receives its power from the tramways power-house. The pump is capable of pumping 500 gallons of water (from tho oity mains) por minuto, and will operate during tho night hours. ' _ . Tho reservoir, erected on a hill-top behind Fitchett Town, overlooking Brooklyn, and 770 feet above the sea-level, is capablo of holding 450,000 gallons, which is a thrco days' supply for about 2700 people. It has tori-iiich inlot and outlet pipes. Mr. Morton, City Engineor, states that the clovation of tho reservoir will givo a pressure of about 170 pounds to tho mains in the principal stroet of Brooklyn and the lower partß of the township, a pressure that will,'of course, deereaso as tho water rises up tho eastern slopes of tho suburb. At prosorit there are no houses as high as tho rosorvoir, and all those now being built are bolow tho altitudo of the wator-works. It is only to tho westward, where tho rough country slopes up to the Karori range, that the land overtops the rosorvoir.
Tho party first visited tho pumping station at tho top of Epuni Street, whero tho Mayor turned on the water, which was allowed to run for about ten minutes, some 7000 gallons beint? accounted for in that timo. Next they inspected the reservoir, which was covered over with boai-ding. Some of the, party went down tho steps, and tho Mayor bponed tho valve and turned the water into tho reservoir. Tho outlot was thon opened, allowing tho water to flow through tho reticulating pipes at Brooklyn. Some of tho Corporation men also fixed a hydrant, and throw some very fino jots of water: to show the pressure in 'the mains.
