Strong efforts were made to indued him to rqtain tho leadership, • but they were unavailing. ' '. Finally, tho party decided to accept tho resignation with deep regret. The appointment of a successor w'as deferred for a- week.Mr. Watson remains a member of tho party. It is considered probable that Mr. Fisher, deputy-leader, will bo appointed to tho leadership.'
