A number" of. peopl who were waiting to meet the. passeugcrs, di persed shortly after 1 o'clock, on being ii formed that she probably anchored in tl Stream until the weather moderated. : Mr. J. Hazard, late chief officer of tho Mai uka, has retired from tho Union Company service to taku up a shore position in Lytic ton. ■ '' It is reported that the Japanese, mail ste mcr Kuniano Mam, an'd tho E. and A. ; Co. Eastern, which left Sydney- for Manila. Chin and Japan, carried gold to tho value •' c .£25,000, shipped by Chinese. . . ; The homeward cargo loaded by the Nair shire ut Lytteltnn was as follows:—For Gin gow: 211!) sacks' Brass seed, 500 cases presom meats. For Liverpool: 217 sacks of grass see 270 cases of preserved meats. For Avoninoutl 300 sacks of peas. For Manchester: 25 bal of waste. ' . . Tho E. and A. The wor occurred'nn September' 13, when tho wind bit with terriffic force at Macao and Ilonghon At Macao considerable loss of life and pr porty occurred. It is stated to havj been tl waist typhoon since 1874. Over a doz<
Chineso were drowned nt Hongkong, but a good warning being given, shipping escaped almost unscathed. Several steamers approaching Hongkong, hoirever, encountered the full fury of the storm, and narrowly escaped destruction. It is feared that the German steamer Sulberg foundered. She was snolcen outside Hongkong prior to the typhoon, since when search by the German gunbont has failed to reveal any trace of her whereabouts. • According to the "New Zealand Herald," Captain J. Robertson, who is at present ashore on sick leave, will probably rejoin the s.s.. Eotoiti at Onehunga to-day. Captain Renaut. who has been in command of the Rotoiti, will take over control of the Takapuna to-morrow, at Now Plymouth. A neat innovation, says the "Taranaki Herald," was shown to one of its reporters last Saturday. It is what Captain Lobb,-of the Segnlus", calls his patent for side lights for steamers. Tfte lights are fastened to a kinc or door, .which can be swung back it the vessel is likely to crush the lamp against the wharf. The idea was given Captain Lobbby vitnessin? fclio berthing of tkVMapourikn. Ihc. first thing she did was to smash her sidclU'lits. so Captain Lobb. began thinking out a v«iv of avoiding such mishaps. Ho communicated his idea to the builders of tns Regulus with the result mentioned. The New Zealand Shipping Co.. received ailvice yesterday thta the. Papanui, which sailed from Wellington on September i, arrived l . Plymouth last Sunday. The local agents of Shaw, Savill and. Co. have received cabled advice 01 the arrival at Plymouth of .the Athcnicylast Sunday, a smart passage o? 38 days. : . The Himinta'rigi was to have left Groymouth yesterday, with a cargo of State coal for i'ox : ton. " Captain R. S. Stewart, late of the Penguin has left for, the South to take command of the Pateena. ; ' ■ The Largo Law, it is. expected, will commence loading coal at Newcastle on October 21 for Mew Zealand. She is expected to arrive .at Wellington about November 3. The Countess of Errol, after discharging the balance oE her coal cargo, some 80 tons, will proceed to the Stream, preparatory to beingconverted into a coal hulk, for the .Wcstport Coal Company. . ... ' The Josenh Sims was timed 'to leave Owhata for "Wellington yesterday, with a cargo of timber. . The 'Vmolia Sims, with a cargo of produce, was expected to leave Lyttelton yesterday, for this port, she having, according to advices received, signed on her crew. \dvice has been received that the Nawaru, at present at Sydney, has 102-1 tons. of. cargo to discharge at Wellington. After leaving Svilnev, she calls at Auckland/and Napier, previous to coming to Wellington. She is due here about November 8. The scow Ilcare, which left Karataea last Fridav; arrived at Weihiißlon. morpfnrr .She. experienced fresh, nort licrlj. winds mi the run up. The.carpi.for Wellington consists of about 75,000 ft. of timber. The Queen of the South will probably call in at Tekamara and Terawhiti on tie *n> down from Foxton to load this seasons wool. The tramp steamer St. Hugo 3590 tons (Clements), 24 days out from Mollendo, Peru, arrived in the stream yesterday for bunker coal and stores. She is expected to resume the voyage to Newcastle to-day.
