THE MIDLAND RAILWAY.
ANOTHER STEP FORWARD. Tho Public Works Department is about to resumo work on _ tho Midland Railway between Otira station and tho tunnel. This section was in hand some time ago, but work was discontinued owing to the delays experienced in connection with tho lotting of tho tunnel contract. Tho tenders forwarded in response to the Department's first advertisement v/ero all too high, and tho Department advertised again. Afterwards, in response to certain representations, tho timo for receiving tenders was extended. All this caused such delay that the Dopartmont thought it wise to discontinue work at this particular section till it was seen ir tenders woro going to be accopted or not.! Now that the tunnel contract has boon lot, the work will bo resumed, and Mr. John Wood. Assistant Engineer, is being transferred' from tho north end of tho Main Trunk lino.to tako chargo of the section under tho general direction of the Resident Engineer at Groymo'ith. Mr. Wood will probably reach Groymouth by the end of next week. Two important iron bridges on tho section, one over Goat crook and tho othor across tho RoUeston river, are already finished, but tho embankments between thfese and from tho ond of tho Rolleston bridge to the tunnel's mouth liavo yet to bo complotcd, though already they are partly formed.
