PREFERENCE.
COMMONWEALTH TARIFF ANALYSED.
BENEFIT TO BRITAIN. PREFERENCE MAY BE MORE LARGELY APPLIED. BY TELEGRAPH—MESS ASSOCIATION—COrXEIQnT. (Rec. Oct. 14, 9.47 p.m.) London, October 14.. ; . The Tariff Commission has published an olaborato analysis of tho now Australian tariff. Tlio Commission considers that while tho tariff will probably causo transference of Australian import. trado from foreign countries to tho United Kingdom, and will affect tho relative proportions of different branches of British exports to Australia, it is unlikely to diminish, and may increa'se, the total volume of British exports. The Commission emphasises tho fact that, under previous tariffs, Britain's share of tho Australian import trado has steadily diminished. Revision, of the tariff was necessary in the interests of t Australian revenue. It is estimated that the valuo of Australian imports tbat are placed on the United Kingdom's free list is. at least three millions,' and that tho value of those placed on the general freo list is at least seven .millions. There still remains a large area of imports to which preference can. be applied.
(Rec. Oct. 14, 11.48 p.m.) ■' ■ London, October 14. The "Morning Post "says "Tho Tariff Commission's.cold, clear analysis shows that Australia's proferenco gives tho Motherland at least as groat an advantage as the authors of the tariff led us to expect."
