Pending tho action of the Scotch railway • companies, which are reconsidering their decision not to consent to recognition of tho Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, the roply of the directois of tho railway companies to the suggestion of Mr. R. Bell (secretary of the Society)—that there should be s prehnunary conference to consider the ( question, of recognition—has not been handed to Mr. Bell. A "passivo resistance strike" of tho Ausi tnan railway emplojees, in which 70,000 took l part, began at tho beginning of tho month. The demands meant an increase ui wages amounting to .£200,000 a year The Conference referred to wa's stated to represent 138,000 workers, and it aoproved the principle of federation of labour An adjournment was then made to enable the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants to be represented.
