$ SENTENCES. Mr. Justice Cooper sentenced two prisoners yesterday morning. FORGERY AND UTTERING. John Desmond, alias D. Esmond, who bad pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to having forged the name of Charles Gibbons to a cheque, for £12 175., and having uttered tho samo to James Vernon at Masterton, was sot' forward. , His Honour, (after perusing a writton stateiiient handed in by the prisoner), addressed him as follows: I havo. no doubt that what you say is tme—what the cause of your having got into criminal courses is due to drink, but, unfortunatoly, you aro an old oifendcr. and the offanco you have pleaded' guilty to is a very serious one. I must sontcnco you to twelve imprisonment with hard labour. You aro at present serving a sautonce. The ono I am passing will run from to-day.

Albort Roberts, who had pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to a cliargo of having stolen jowollery valued at £36 135., from the dwelling of IVank Bedford, at Bosworth Terracpj asked His Honour to deal leniently with him. Stealing from a dwelling-; houso is a vory serious offence, arid I cannot pass a light sentence in a caso of this kind. ■ In reply to His Honour, tho Crown Irosecutor (Mr.'> Myers) stated that only ■ a small portion, of the stolen jewellery had been recovered, arid that the prisoner had not assisted the police in. any way. His Honour (continuing) said This cl.as of offe'neo must bo put down. The prisoner will be sentenced to three years' imprisonment, the torm to start to-day. At : ten o'clock this morning Mr. Justice Cooper will pass sentence on John Rowan for breaches of "The Bankruptcy 'Act." No other business has so far been set down for to-day.
