THE BUTTER FAT CONTEST.

Show, a last year's competitor told our Palmerston representative that one reason why the entries are not more numerous is on account of the risk which owners have to take. It is onjy the best animals that can competo in such a competition, and a fanner who is residing at, say Taranaki, certainly does take upon himself a risk in sending a valuable cow to compete. The cows have to bo located at Mr.- Batehclor's farm ten (lays ' before tho show, and the test is taken during tho last four days. During this period tho cows are under the supervision of different hands. They will, it is true,' be supervised by two men and tho dairy instructors, and every care will bo taken of them. Besides, Mr. Batchelor's farm is. an •ideal orio, but at the same time, it is hard to dispel'the idea from tho careiul farmer that his animal might possibly return home in a worse condition. Another special feature about tho competition, which almost ensures the safety of competing cows, is that no dogs are allowed. ' The pasture last year was' ideal, • and will probably bo the saine on this occasion. It comprised • a 'mixture"of timothy, rye," find cocksfoot, and the latter was plentiful. Such pasture should induce the cows to give a good tcst, : but when it comes to butter making it might bo surpassed by others.
