FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL.

"THE SHARE. MARKET., .-i.The sitting' on- 'Change 011 Saturday did not reveal any improvement on the •position developed ill the middle of tho week. 1 There < was : the same dullness as regards investment' shares. On the whole the past week was extremely quiet and dull, and there is not much prospcct of. any improvement this week. There will be tho Labour Day holiday on Wednesday to cause a disturbance, but in any caso business is likely to be dull. Sellers of Bank of New Zealand shares have, with very great reluctance, no; doubt, lowered their quotations to a fraction below the J2lO level. National .Bank shares , are offered at' ,£5 ,95., but there aro no'buyers. For Insurance shares there developed an inquiry for Standards at 21s. New Zealands are offered at .£-!■ 2s. fid. In Financial shares there are no changes. The demand for Equitable Building shares at £10 lias been met by if selling quotation at .£lO S.i The inquiry for National Mortgage at J!3 3s. .was-renewed, and sellers repeated their prices for Loan and 'Mercantile at 75.,- and- Wellington Deposit at 10s. No change ,is to bo noted ; in Gas shares. Haweras were ■in demand throughout the week at 215., and Napier Gas shares were on snlo at ,£25 and „£IG for prospective issues'. In. Meat shares there was the same old demand for Gears at •i7s. r Gd.,'and Meat Exports at .£3ss. Gd. The persistence with which Manawatu Rails have been offered at 425.. looks like an effort to keep the: value down. The demand , 'for .Westporf-Stockton Coal shares' appears to have ceased, and B3llers:were asking 7s. Gd. for tlie.shares, or the same 'price at which t.hey were sold ,on Friday. Kauri Timber shares, 15s. paid up, were in request at 7s. 9d. There is 'a liability ;of 18s. on these share's/arid for years past they have been Standing at lOd. to 25., but during the piist -four months. there has arisen a very strong, demand, .which has caused the shares to. advance to the present quotation. Obviously the prospects of the 'company are better, or at least they are tio regarded by investors. N. 55. Portland Cement shares, were offered at 355., and; Taranaki Petroleum at , lis. . THE MONEY MARKET. The figures of tho Bank of England published on- Saturday display tho movements usual at the turn of the quarter.: The'stock of gold has been reduced from' £37,36.9.000 to £35,055,000, n decrease of £1,711,000, and the reserve of notes' and coin is lower by. £2,403,000', ■while the proportion of reserve' to liabilities at 4S.BG per cent, is -2.41 per cent, lower than it was a week ago. Compared with the corresponding' date of 'last year tho figures show :to advantage, and in the matter of bullion alone tho.-Bank; is £3,331.009 better than it was. a ycar. ago, and the proportion of reserve to liabilities is lO.SGper .cent. 3t is now seen that the Directors' of the Bank acted with commendable, .caution when tlvey advanced the official minimum discount rate to 45 per cent. The Bank is better able to meet, the demands likely to be made on it. than was the .case a year ago, and much depends upon the volume ami strength of the demands whether the discount rate is raised to 5 per cent. We had both a 5 and a 15 per cent, rate in the last quarter of last year, but a repetition of such stringency sc-emr, hardly possible. We may have 5 per' cent., but that will depend upon the turn of affairs in Wall Street. • ' t 'i - 1 . ra<i : . r/roniing, to the cable mwage rewived at this office, is £4 Is. "A. per cent,, or fc. 9d. above the- rate current in the previous week*. At the tor:'w.w;;d;ng date last year tiie open inirlwt rate stood at M ,7s. od., having been ad' vaneed by . 275. fid. during (lie wet!:, Last year the Bank rate was raised to 5 per cent, on October 11. The London Stock Exchange was not disturbed by the money market movements, lor Government securities are uneiia;;gf.d. New Zealand 4's and Wcntraliau iij's and 3's are all lower by 40:;., but this is anticipation of the interest due on November 1. Ip. Die case of th'j West Australian securities the. movements indicate a slight decline. , BANK OF AUSTRALASIA. By Telegraph.—Association.—Copyright Londos, October 4. Sir C. W. Fremantle, presiding at a meeting of the TJank of Australasia, said the windfall of recoveries on account of bad and doubtful debts had been exceptionally large. Those amounts had been placed to reserve. The returning prosperity of' Australia had not increased the business of the banks; the immediate effect had been to render customers more independent of the bank, which ■ preferred a moderate and safe, if slow, expansion to fostering an undue advance iii values by a too ready offer of banking facilities. By Telegraph—Association—Copyright. London, Octobcr 4. The New Zealand Shipping Company lias declared a dividend of five per cent, and carried forward' ,£10,760. . EFFECT OP FALL IN COPPER, By Telegraph.—Association.-Copyright. . ••• Aiibmidb, October 5. Owing to the low price of copper, tho Parramatta Copper Mine at Moonta has closed down, and 300 persons are idle. The world's output of aluminum for 1308 was about 15,(100 tons, of which the American concern, located at Shawcnegan Falls, Canada, supplied about 20 per ccnt. . The metal has become available in so many ways in recent years as to make it a precious one. The'only method by which aluminum has been produced iirany considerable quantity is the Hale process of manufacture from "the oxide, but an American inventor has produced a process for refining the metal by electrolysis, which may bring about its wider use under more advantageous conditions. Negotiations have been brought to a conclusion which promise very shortly a revival of prosperity on the Barrier line of reef at Wyalong similar to that experienced in'the early days of the field (says tho "Melbourne Argus"). It transpires that the Barrier, which for some timo has been worked in a somewhat primitive fashion by its owners, a party of four, has been floated into a company concern with a capital of ,£BOOO, and that it is, intended forthwith to start the erection of poppet heads and extensive machinery at a cost of .£2500. The Barrier has been turning out excellent criishings lately. A winzo down 80ft. from tho 400 ft. level is on highgrade mineral stone. It was stated recently that a discovery of cinnabar (sulphide of mercury) hail been made on the property of the St. Gcorgo Copper and Coal Minos, North Queensland, but its extent or importance -had not been, tested. Mr. Alex. Christie, the inino manager, now reports that the mine has been so far developed that ho can send away an unlimited quantity of cinnabar for treatment. Tn ins pamphlet on "Mercury, or 'Quicksilver,' " in tho "Mineral Resources of New South Wales" series of works, Mr. ,T. E. Carne, F.G.S., wrote"Tho importance of workablo deposits of mercury in a gold-producing country cannot be easily over-estimated. Unfortunately, Australasia hns-nnt, yet been able to add it to her list? of profitable mineral products, in Now South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, and New Zealand, the principal and. only workable ore, the sulphide cinnabar and its. varieties, has been found in more or less hopeful quantities (associated in some instances with the native metal) from which small quantities of mercury have been locally retorted." A feature, in the gradual waning of the dredging industry in Otago feavs a has been ' the frequent shipments of-'the dredges of liquidated companies to Victoria. The opinion is now. exoressed that, owing to tho; exceptionally high .tariff fixed by !1 10 Commonwealth Government, namely, IB per cent., as against per cent' formerly, the exportation' of dredges from New Zealand to that State will practically cease.
