Thero was dull, cool weathor, with occasional drizzling showers, for tho opening day of tho Australian Jockey Club's meeting. Tbo attendance was large. Tho following are tho results:— FIRST HURDLES. About two and a quarter miles. - Superstition, list. 71b 1 Waratali, lOst. 71b 2 Kotyshi, 9st. 51b 3 Ten started. Betting: 2 to 1 against Waratali, 7 to 1 Superstition and Nickel, 10 to 1 Kotyshi. Won by a long neck. Needlework finished third to last. Merriwai Was scratched. Time, 4min. 14|secs. • TRIAL STAKES. Ono and a quarter miles. Mr. P. M'Carthy's Garches, by Voyou—Fairy 1 Orange' 2 Camora ' 3 Six started. Betting: 7 to 4 on Garches, 3 to 1 against Camera, 8 to 1 10 to 1 the others. Hotting: 2 to 1 on Mountain King, 5 to 1 against Peru, 7 to 1 Wclcomo Trist and Maranui. From a good start the pace was slow. Maranui and Welcome Trist were tho first to move, and. passing tho stand tho order was Wolcomo Trist, Maranui, and Peru, who wore slightly in ad-' vance of Mountain King and Seddon. Before tho mile post was reached, Alibi had run through, and led by a couple of .lengths from Maranui, Wclcomo Trist, Peru, Seddon, and Mountain King. The pace was still slow, but at tho river bank it began to improve, and hero Alibi was loading from Maranui, Wolcomo, Trist, and Mountain King. Half a inile from homo Wolcomo Trist displaced Alibi, a length away being Marainii and Peru. At tho bend Alibi ■ had raced up to Welcome Trist, and they swept into the straight in tho following ordor: Welcome 'l'rist and Peru, with Mountain King, who had passed Alibi, third. At the distance tho field closed up, and liero Mountain King and Maranui wero m tlio van. The former continued to movo forward while tho Now Zealander began to falter and fell away to tlio' roar, Mountain King eventually winning by half a length, a length separating second and third. ■ Maranui finished sixth. After somo delay, a good start was effected,"Melodrama bfiing first away, and at the seven-furlong post Paytcn's representative led from Buddali, Lord Beauchamp, Mooltan, lolaire, and Royal Arthur, tho field stringing out. Coming to the bond, Mooltan moved up to Buddali,• who now headed Molodrama. : Entering the straight, Mooltan just showed' ahead of Buddali, Melodrama, lolaire,' Antonio, and Virtu, with Lord Beauchamp, Moolta,n, lolaire, lloyal Arthur, great race homo resulted. Antonio, coming very, fast,'joined the leaders, and a ding-dong race to the post ensued, Melodrama beating the favourite by a head,; with Antonio a length away. Ti'nio, lmin. 38Jsecs. The general feeling was that tho favourite had won, and there was a good deal of comment at the judge's, decision. SPRING STAKES, 750 sovs. One and a half miles. Mr. W. R. Robertson's b.c. Poseidon, by Positano (imp.)— Jacinth, 4yrs., (Clayton) 1 Mr. R. Cleland's br.c. Apologue, by Phaibus Apollo—Miss Gladys, syrs. (Coffey) ;... 2 • Mr. J. Macken's b.h. Tartan, by Lochiel—Colours, aged '(Smith) 3 There wore six starters. Betting: 5 to 2 oh Poseidon, o to 1 against Collarit, 8 to 1 Tartan, 20 to 1 Apologue. The New Zealander, frith Poseidon, was the first, to move. On passing the stand Collarit took the lead, followed by Apologue, Poseidon, and Tartan. At tho end of a milo Collarit had an advantage of a couple of lengths, and maintained' this position to tho straight, where Poseidon ran up to tho leader, with Tartan and Apologue three lengths' off. At the distance Poseidon went to tho front, and though Apologue put in a good run the favourite won easily by a length and a half. Time, 2min. 34jsccs. KENSINGTON HANDICAP. Seven furlongs. , • 1 Lord Cecil, 7st. 71b. 1 Submarine, Bst. 41b .-. '. 2 Epic, 7st 3 Thirty started. Betting: 4 to 1 against Rubus, 6 to 1 Gecko and Nitcifera, '7 to 1 Intended, 20 to 1 tho others.
