A meeting in Calcutta, which demanded solf-governmcnt, was dispersed by tho police. Street rioting followed, and showers of stones wero thrown. Shops we're looted. . Tho disturbance lasted many hours. Tho mob was oventually dispersed by six divisions of police. Forty police wero injured. The mooting, it transpires, was organised by sympathisers with recently punished students. Subsequently students and hooligans gathered on tho roofs of Northern Calcutta and pelted trams and passers-by with brickbats. Europeans were singled out for attack. Bengali newspapers blamo the polico, alleging that the situation was created in order to throw discredit on Mr. Koir Hardio. Melbourne, October 5. In tho Senate, Senator Dobson denounced tho mischievous, unpatriotic, and traitorous speeches of Mr. Koir Hardio in India, and declared that ho deserved hanging. AN EXAGGERATION.
