A gentleman prominently connected with tho coal industry, 1 in a lottor to tho Press, characterises tlio statements regarding . tho coal vend as reckless and without foundation. 1 Ho declares that for the last ten years the proprietors havo been practically giving thoir coal away at prices whicli'in most cases involved lqss, and so far from acting in any tyrannical way in raising prices, they aro only taking a step which is just to thomsolves, and which will admit of trading operations showing a moderate return. Ho claims that tho proprietors havo a perfect right to appoint their own shipping - agents tor the handling of coal.
