How much-of'her. wealth and prosperity Holland owes to her women and children. • A writer' in "St. Nicholas" tells how while her men were away at tho wars, or extending their possessions, or carrying their goods to nil parts of the globe in their stout ships, the women and children stayed at homo and worked. They mado lace, some of ; which was so fino and beautiful that it was sold to rich nobles for 400 dollars a yard. They spun cloth, -red or black in colour, very fine/and . soft, which they sold in many countries, using for themselves a coarse, cheap cloth called frieze, which they bought in England. They mado butter, too, of' tho best, and this thoy. sold, aijd the money was turned .in .for their country's use when it was needed. .. Besides . the lace, the women of Holland made linen from tho flax which they grow in their gardens among tho tulips and lilies. This linen was so choice that ,it was in 'great demand, and, it became known by the namo of."Hollands."
