Miramar Borough Council.
The ordinary meeting of the Miramar Borough Council, which was held last evening,' was attended by the Mayor (Mr. C. J. Crawford) and Councillors Chase-Morris, M'Leod, East, Brodie, and 8011. ,
Mr. "J-' . Stacey. asked that Hector Street, which he described • as nothing but a sand-drift, be made available for traffic. It was decided to comply with the request when it suited tho convenience of the borough staff. A number. of residents petitioned tho Council to obtain control of either tho whole or part of the Defence Reserve at. Seatoim as. a borough reserve. The .Mayor stated that the area would, with. a little preparation, make one of the best iitliletic grounds in or,about (Wellington. 'Ho did not expect that the Department would agreo to' hand over the reserve, but tlero would he no harm in endeavouring to obtain possession of it.' On the, motion of Councillor Chase-Morris, it was decided to approach the Department with a view of securing control of the reserve. Mr. Charles Simmonds wrote stating that passe, ugevs , expcvjcnccd difficulty in locating the-,rariotis tramway stop-ping-places in the borough, owing to tho lack of lighting facilities. The Mayor pointed out that a number of the regular tram conductors ha'd been away from.work-'through influenza, and that the men who 'had taken their places were' not conversant with the locality of the stations. The matter was referred to the .Tramways Committee. The secretary of the Wellington Harbour Board informed the Council that it'would agree to the erection of a concrete reservoir, i for water supply purposes, on the Signal Station at Beacon Hill, on condition that the level of the reservoir did not obstruct the view of the station,, and, if the Council paid an annual rental of .£lO and supplied the Board with water free of cost. The Mayor 'stated that the Board could not expect the Council to supply, free of cost, Iwater which was pumped"'to the highest spot in the locality.' A-valuable site'could, <he-said, be obtained at a reasonable figure. It was decided to thank the Board for its consideration of tho matter, and to decline its request. i, < Messrs. Seaton and Sladden reported that the completion of the Seatoun tunnel presented a more satisfactory aspect, in that the Hon. 6. P.' Richardson had been asked by the Public Trustee to jadvise him "and, on his behalf, to go into the matter of handing over the works to the Council. Air the detail work of trimming up the roads, etc., should, the writers pointed out, be completed by the' time the tunnel was completed. Then only the metalling of' the roadway, kerbing' and asphalting, would require to be finished. It'would take three weeks to complete tho tunnel, the time-being governed by the expedition of the work at the Seatoun end. The report was received. Miramar, Lt(l., offered to form, at once, the footpath leading from Miramav wharf to "Wonderland," a work which it was intended to provide for in the liext'loan proposals. Tho Council could, they iaid, repay them in three years' time.' This was agreed to, and a suggestion as to lighting the street was referred to the Tramways Committee.
It was decided to increase the salary ot the Town Clerk (Mr. R. E. Bennett) by .£SO per annum.
