NEW GEM FOUND.
According to a TinfFan's 'Agency > message, dated Now York, August 1, a new gem of great beauty has been discovered ill California. It is a clear, transparent blue stone, with violet tints and .1 depth of colouring in parts which rival the hues of tho sapphiro. Tho gem surpasses the sapphire in brilliancy, but is not. so hard, although it is harder than tho opal. It turns to a bright rod under lic'at, and re- '\ sutnes its normal sfyados on cooling, ' •The stono «!ias been named tho "Benito,." after the county wher't it was found.
