Clark's thread mills at Paisley—a busy town 'of Renfrewshire, Scotland, with largo manufactures of cotton thread—have been closed, and 5000 employees liavo been thrown idle. Dissatisfaction arose because some hundreds of mill girls struck out of sympathy with some fifty boy strikers. The girls created a disturbance, which ultimately caused the stoppage of the mills. The girls came into conflict with the police, pelting them with bobbins, and being roughly handled in return., CONCILIATION ADVOCATED. London, October 2. Home is the long-pending dispute between the railway companies and the Amalgamated Society of Bailway-'Servants, which body the owners refuse to recognise and negotiate with. The society is to take a ballot of its members to ascertain whether they arc prepared to strike, at a given time in order to .secure recognition and. redress. Even'if the ballot is carried, Mr. Bell, the secretary, says that further, peaceful 'overtures will be made before striking. 1
