• COAL ORDER FOR WALES. . By Telegraph—Association.—Copyright.. New, York, October 1. ■ The United' States Government, with the object of preventing the inflation of American contractors' • prices,-',,will shortly invite • tenders' in Cardiff for £200,000 worth of Welsh coal. The order is intended, for the use of . the fleet which is proceeding for a cruise in the Pacific. - . . While the .United States Government, considering that American tenderers are . asking too much, is sending coal orders to Britain, the British Government, : having a ' similar grievance against English tenderers, is buying Army horseshoes in America. The Minister of War, Mr. Haldane, was attacked-for this step, and-defended the • sending abroad of the order for horseshoes on the. ground that ho could get them at prices 15 to 20 per cont. cheaper than British suppliers require. Nevertheless, Mr. Haldane's actions are being sharply watched, as is shown by the complaint of Mr. J. F. Remnant, II.P. for Holborn, that "in the case of the Royal Medical College now being erected at Millbank at a cost of ,£BO,OOO of public money, the following subcontracts have been let abroad Granite, ,£2ISG; fireproof construction, .£7708; asphalt, JJIG2O, wood-flooring,. <£1400; Italian mosaic pavement, .£800; sanitary and lavatory wares (to be made abroad by ; an English firm), JB1800; window glass in Belgium; <£260; and paint from Hamburg, Jl00."
