A DESIRABLE END.

Sir Bobert Stout has not had long to wait for a response to the appeal which he embodied in the article on "Higher Education" contributed to the initial issue of The Dominion. In that, article he set out, with the force and cogency characteristic of his judicial pronouncements, the case fcfr efficiency in higher education as a national requirement. " May we not then," he wrote, " appeal to the patriotism of our rich settlers? It is their duty to help those near and dear to them, but it is also their duty, out of their abundance, to think of and remember their people and country." He was able to announce, at last night's meeting that he had received a donation of £25 for expenditure 011 some purpose in accordance with the ideas set out in the article referred to, and he has. decided to devote the sum lo the purchase of books on scientific agriculture for the Victoria College Library. The Chief Justice has long held that the university may, with great profit to the country, turn its attention to the encouragement of scientific farming. The establishment of a Faculty of Agriculture in connection

with Victoria College is, perhaps, a rather distant hope, but it. can be brought greatly nearer to realisation by a watchful exposition of its value to the large agricultural district north of this city. We hope that the example of the gift announced by Sir Robert Stout will stimulate others to a like public-spirited-ness, and set in train si movement that is full of possibilities of material benefit.
