MR. SINGLETON'S RETURN.

DAIRY SCHOOL NOW ASSURED. HOW CANADA MARKETS ITS CHEESE. Tho one thing which has delayed the establishment of the dairy school —Mr. Singleton's absence from the Dominion—is now at an end. Mr. Singleton arrived back from his northhomisphere trip yesterday by tho Maheno. That tho dairy school will now bo set going without delay will bo apparent to all who heard tho Hon. R. M'Nab's famous speech at the last Manawatu winter show. Mr. M'Nab was reported as follows: — About the experimental station —about which there was some disappointment that it had not been started—ho wished to explain how it was this experimental station, promised last session, was not an ac■complished fact. All arrangements were made, but Mr. Singleton, who, it was intended, should take charge, (had mado arrangements for a holiday to tho Mother Country to obtain tho very latest information available about sucli institutions, and to come back thoroughly up-to-date. It was therefore decided, in view of his early return, that it would probably result in waste of ; public money to go on with establishing* the institution, lest there Should be things ho would condemn on his return. He (Mr. N'Nab) therefore found it necessary to ask the industry to.wait patiently for another season, rather ' j than run the risk incurred by acting hastily. As we announced in The Dominion of yesterday, it is understood to be settled that the dairy school shall bo at Levin. Levin is becoming quite a centre of State activity. Mr. Singleton, in an interview yesterday, said of Canada: —"Everyone is in the West. The wholo country is going ahead, but money is therefore tight. Tlie labour difficulty iis still seriousj in spite of the great tide of immigration. Canadians are .■better off ' than we axe in the marketing of checso in-one respect. They 'have markets for all varieties and; Equalities. If the cheese is slightly .'open in texture, tho manager will foriward it, say, to Manchester, and other equalities will go to 'their respective fmarkots. Wo, on the other hand, ibave to mainUiin a standard article -with the least possible variation ill 'quality. The London merchants speak very highly of our 'cheese. As "to tho probable supplies, tho latoness of the spring reduced the Canadian total, but in England a largo quantity of milk had been diverted from icecream and other uses to tho manufacture of checse. So there nnght be a slight increase." : His closing remark was ono which .will bo well considered by factory .directors whose outputs are still uniplsccdt "Tho merchants, h© sziidj j ''are feeling tho losses on last season's purchase of cheese and butter, and aro,.'not prepared to ofter the same prices as last year."

THE TAIHAPE TREK,
