GREATEST LINGUIST.
Father Erasmus Hering, reputed to bo tho world's greatest linguist, died at Landcslmt Slonastery on July 25, at the ago of soventy-mne.
Ho had been n monk in tho monastery for moro than fifty years, and ho had absolute command of thirtythree ancient and* modern languages, an unprecedented intellectual achievement.
Tho celebrated Giuseppo Mezzofanti, who died in 1849, was reputed to be able to speak fifty-two languages, while Mr. Jeremiah Curtin, who died last year at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is said to lmvo known seventy tongues. A good many of those languages, howovor, were merely dialects or modifications of 'other root languages.
