"DOMINION" DAY.

Sir,—The alteration of New Zealand's title from Colony to Dominion has been made the pretext for another addition to her long list of public 11011days—" 'anritUcmft mnrnn<itlifi upon them," say those unfortunates, who, not being Government servants, arc asked to regard the prospect ot heavy financial loss as an occasion for rcjoicing. "What's in a name?" The colonist. in all things practical, leaves to outsiders, who have more time to think about it, tho task of deciding his adopted country's cognomen, being mainly anxious as to whether a change will affect liini from a material poiht of view. Holidays are sufficiently numerous to make it difficult to remember what important event each commemorates. may it not bo hoped that "Dominion" Day mil mark an event of unusual interest to Wellington •citizens, inasmuch as about that time a second Dominion' came into being in (.lie shape of a new morning paper? When we consider the aspersion which was formerly cast on the profession of journalism, it is wonderful to note the change in public opinion to-dny. And this change has done much to raise its

general tone. The influence of our modern Press is so gre.it that every effort should be made to shield it from abuse. We are glad to think the traditions of England's Press are those of scrupulous honesty. Her colonics must loyally uphold them. With the birth of Tim Dominion newspaper, tho Dominion of New Zealand-takes hold upon a new lease of life. May both follow the road which leads to prosperity!— Yours, etc., A. A. M. Palmerston North, Sept. 30. [Portions of -the above letter have been omitted. We appreciate the kindly sentiments expressed, but do not think they should be given publicly in our columns.—Ed.] .
