SMOKE CONCERT. '' Tho annual smoko concert of St. James's Football Club was held in Godber'r, Rooms last evening, Mr. A. Campbell presiding. There were about sixty present. The chairman congratulated the club upon the great' measure of success which had attended its first year's appearance in the senior grade. Referring to the professional element which had come forward in New Zealand Rugby during tho* past season, 'Mr. Campbell said football should not be played in the hope of making a living out o fit. (Hear, hear.) They should play the game for the sake of the sport "itself, not using it as a means of livelihood, but for training tho young men of the country and making them better citizens. lie hoped tho Rugby Union would continuo to stand firm as regards tho proprofessionals, and trsuted that when the New Zealand professional team returned thero would be . no white-tf'shing done. The following loisV's! was gono through.:—" The Ifin;r "The Wellington Rugby Union," proposal by Mr. Cozens, " Tho Referees' Association," proponed by Mr. J. Ferguson, "The St. James's Club," proposed by Mr. P. Smith, and "Kindred Sports," proposed by. Mr. Prank Alpe. Songs were contributed by Messrs. P. Crowes, F. Wright, Fred Alpe, Frank Alpe, ']'. Driscoll, and A. Kilto, and 'a recitation by Mr. B. Murray.
