D. C. M'INTYRE'S ARREST.
MR. WILLCOXS' STORY. A representative of tho Christchurch "Press" has obtained from Mr.E. (J. Willcox, of tho Christchurch offico of tho Now Zealand Loan 'and Mercantile 'Agency Company the following _ account of tho incident which nearly led to that- gentleman's arrest at Monto Video on suspicion of being D. G. M'lntyre. A cablegram sent to the authorities there road that M'lntwe was " known to passenger Charts Wilcox," and-the word "to " .was understood to imply " as." After explaining how" the passengers chafpd at ! the delay in being allowed ashore, and how eventually thoy. did go, M'lntyre being among tho number, Mr. Willcox says:— "Next day Captain Forbes met mo in the street and sstid, 'I lir.d a job to provent you from being arrested vestcrday. Luckily for yon, Mr. J., Tiickerton Fisher was able to convince tho authorities that 110 had known yon for years, and. was able to show that roil wore n'ot .M'lntyre.' It appears Shat the man who came 011 board from i'no launch had a warrant for tlioarrost. of ' M'lntyre, alias Charles Willcox.' 1 It transpired afterwards that the delay at which the passengers hat! chafed was duo to tho fact that- tho police officer, had to go ashoi'e and have the warrant amended to ' M'lntyre,. alias Charles Wilieox, alias Mack.' These facts I did not know till tho next morning, though M'lntyre blamed mo for his arrest. .In this he '<as. quite wrong, for, as a matter or iactj I did not know that M'lntyre was 'wanted.' I was not arrested,-and personally, .1 was'not inconvenienced, exccpt that. I was tho subject, of a large, ambunt of chaff, and I ain still recoiving similar attention from my friends. . Tho situation was 0110, howover, that might navo • proved extremely awkward for nic if it-.had not facon that Mr, Bickertrii Fisher was amongst the passengers, and was able tn satisfy the Monto Video authorities: respecting my idontitv. A peculiar feature of the incident is that, though my full nahio is 'Edwin Charles, I "am'always known as s Charles,' my first name never being used by those who know me."
