CHARTREUSE DEFINED

Sir Justice Joyce deckled in London on Ju)v 31, that the Carthusian monks tire not entitled to. call the ■liqueur made by them " Chartreuse." When tho monks were expelled from France thoy set up a manufactory in Spain. The French Government took over their monastery, and is making a liqueur there. It was to prevent the French liqueur being sold as" Chartrouso that, tho action was brought by the monks. ■ Mr. Justice Joyce's judgment stated that after tho expulsion of tho monks tho sequestrator appointed by tho French Government becanio entitled to tho business at La Grande Chartreuse, and particularly to the; distillery and tho assets and goodwill. "The business now carried on by tho monl;s of Tarragona is not in any legal sense tho old business carried on at Chartreuse, or a continuation of it," he declared. "The signification is entirely local, and the moults arc not entitled to use tho word outside Franco. There has been no misrepresentation regarding the French liqueur." The aciion was dismissed with costs.
