EARTHQUAKE.
GAUTEMALA SHAKEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. (Received September 26, 9.43 p.m.) New York, Soptomber 26. An earthquake in Gautemola, capital of the central American republic of tho saiuo name, caused considerable damage to a number of houses aiid churches. Tho shock is attributed to a subtorranean volcano in ..tho vicinity of the city. ' Guatemala la Antigua (Old Guatemala), which was located 21 miles west-south-west of the present capital, was destro'vod l)v ah earthquake—tor the second time-in 1773. It was one of the finest cities of America, and had 80,000 inhabitants. The present Guatemala, WOOft. above the sea level, has a population of 93,000, and is tlw largest and most important' city of Central America, having tramways and electric light and modern improvements. Notable structures, are the Government buildings and the Archbishop's palace, above which towers the Alctropahtan Cathedral. '
