Major Keddell, S.M., was presented with a purse of sovereigns by the Bar and citizens of Palmerstou on Wednesday, it being hislast visit there in magisterial cappacity.
Tho lion. R. M'Nab was unable to take part in yesterday's celobrations, being confined to his room with illness. Last evening ho was slightly better.
Mrs. James Goodgame, an old resident of Forty Mile Bush, dropped dead at Mauriceville yesterday. The cause of death was heart disease.
Mr. A. H. Miles, resident partner of Murray, Roberts and Co., left for Gisborno by the Waikaro last evening.
Mr. William Mullcr, of Gisborno, is at present visiting Wellington.
Mcshrs. Davy, and Witty, M'c. HJU-i left for tho South last evening by tho Rotomahana. ,
Mrs. A. Rutherford and Miss Rutherford, left for Auckland by tho Waikaro last night.
His Excellency the Governor is tc attend tho final porero of tho Wellington Savage Club, to be, held in the Masonic Hall on Saturday. This wilt Vonelude the Club's social operations for the present season.
Many organisations of labour have written to tho relatives of tho late Mr. James Mackay, Chiof Clerk fc» tho Labour Department and Chief Inspector of Factories, testifying to the personal esteem in which he was held. The New Zcalund Employers' Federation -have expressed the deepest regret, and the Wellington Employers' Association forwarded the following letter: —" It was our privilege to come in contact with Mr. Mackay in regard to many matters affecting employers, and it affords us sad pleasure to say that we ever found him a fair and just man, one who carried out duties of a not pleasant nature in a gentlemanly and unbiassed manner, nccordinig relief to ' employers when ciienmf.tanccs justified lonioncy, but displaying a firmness that well fitted him for the posil.icr he occupied. We are sine ho will bo much missed by and be ill spared to our Colony. 13is early call will be. very much regretted by many people of ail shades of opinion, and in many different spheres of life."
