An insatiable local demand waits on tho egg industry at remunerative prices, and there is a reliable outlet for tho export of poultry. Tho industry has made big strides since the Government took official part in the effort to produce egg-laying strains. A Government flock of 500 is established as tho basis of future advances on these lines. The flock is soon to he increased to a thousand, and sittings of pedigree eggs from tested layers will bo available for distribution. Tho egg-laying competitions have given tho egg business a strong fillip.
Tho advances liavo been laboured ones: Tho local demand is much greater than the supply at prices much above tho prolit. minimum, and we aro now on tho eve of an export industry in apples. The decision of a syndicate to plant a 100-acro bloc!; of pippin fruit at Greytown next season will probably bo the copingstone in this direction, for with the aid of tho few existing largo concerns tho necessary big consignments will be available. A medium crop of apples would be 400 bushels per acre and tho present gross value about £100.
