THE GOLD DUTY.

The present position of tie gold duty question is this :—A sum of £SOOO has bean passed on the Estimates for a rebate of one shilling per ounce on gold, the produce of Ota*o, during the current year. The regulations under which this hums, as it is called, is to be paUl will be formed by the Government. It has- been suggested by the movers in the gold duty reduction that the certificate obtained on gold brought down by escort should be.a sufficient proof, entitling the payment of the reba/,e. This method has this in its favour, —that the banks would be able to raise the prbe of gold at all their branches, as they at once would receive the repayment before slipment. The banks are the chief employers of the escort. This is a matter of detail wlich can very easily be, if the Government are in earnest, settled. The Government have thought it necessary to introduce a Gold Bonus Ordinance, which differs in this particular from the ill-fated one of last year,—that it contains a statutory declaration as to the gold being the produce of Otago. The xioney is already appropriated, and should tie Ordinance be disallowed, there is no re&son why the rebate should not be effected.— Mount Ida Chronicle.
