EUROPEAN NEWS. Great 'cold has been experienced in England. One day in Docomber six inches <of snow lay in the streets 'of London, and thesnow and ice stopped the river navigation and railway travelling in various parts of the country. A terrible railway accident occurred on the Great Western line, near Oxford, on Christmas •eve. One hundred lives were lost. No particulars are to hand. A Berlin despatch says that the report that ■Queen Victoria had written to the Emperor of Germany, urging him to adopt a more moderate policy with regard to the strife now proceeding in Germany between the 'Ghurch and State, caused much comment, and was regarded by ultramontane circles with much favour. The Lord Chamberlain of England has prohibited indecent theatrical performance, and warned managers of theatres against allowing indecent dances or permitting actresses to wear indecent dresses. The French vintage of 1874 is calculated to be the most bounteous ever known, and will yield 1,537,500,000 gallons. The new law requiring military duty of all citizens in Russia has caused large emigration. The Mohammedan subjects and Tartars in the Crimea deserted their homes by thousands until the police stopped them. Now many escape by stealth, and reach the Turkish dominions. A Madrid despatch says that King Alfonso has issued an address to the people of Spain, in which he promises to exercise a liberal policy towards his subjects in his administration of the affairs of the kingdom. He states that holders of bonds will receive payment in full, and that all persons now in arms against the country who shall acknowledge allegiance to the Crown will be granted an amnesty. He also promises liberty of free worship and "the freedom of the Press. Among the last fashionable arrivals in Paris is that of " General Dot," the rival of 'Tom Thumb. The gallant dwarf is of German origin, and his unprofessional name is Leopold Khan. He was born in San Francisco, of parents of giant proportions. The new " general" weighs 181bs. He is said to liave made a fortune in America with Barnum. It is announced that the Pope has given Cardinal Franchi, to be sent to the Marquis •of Ripon, a magnificent crucifix, the figure of the Saviour and the ornaments being of silver. The pedestal contains a vejy precious Yelic. More than 40 sheep have been killed in the Mullingar district by one or two wolves, which are said to have escaped from a menargerie in,,the North of Ireland. Patrols pf police are scouring the country in search of the depredators. The British ship British King is backed for £I,OOO a side to sail the American ship Three Brothers from California to Liverpool. Since the famine in Asia set in, 50,000 persons have migrated to the city of Aden, and "25,000 have since died. A measure to abolish the income-tax in England is promised. Australian and American teams are expected to compete at Wimbledon. Prince Leopold has been dangerously ill after an attack of typhoid fever, but has now recovered. i ■/ The Rev. Charles Kingsley is dead. ,; News of the burning of the Cospatrick was received at London on December 28th by a telegram from Madeira stating that three of the crew of the unfortunate vessel had arrived at St. Helena. The Cospatrick was burned on November 17, in lat. 37 S., long. 12 E. When the vessel was discovered to be oil fire, 80 persons, mostly women, rushed into one boat, which capsized, and all were drowned. Soon afterwards the masts fell, killing many passengers, who were crowded together on deck. An explosion subsequently occurred, and the vessel sank. The second mate and two seamen were picked up by the British Sceptre, after subsisting on the bodies of their companions. A conflagration at the city of Tokio, Japan, destroyed 1,180 houses. Archbishop Manning is to be made a Cardinal. The Pope's health is again occasioning anxiety. The physicians state that the slow and progressive decline of his vital powers is perceptible. A series of military manceures by French and German armies, announced to take place in spring, is creating uneasiness, being considered as preliminary of war. The Duchess Paucelet signed a letter to a French Archbishop offering to kill Bismarck for 12,000f. She now asserts that the al leged conspiracy was a joke, and that she signed the letter while intoxicated. Grand Duke Nicholas, nephew of the Emperor of Russia, convicted of stealing his mother's diamonds, is declared insane. Mr Gladstone has written to Earl Granville, resigning the leadership of the Liberal party in the House of Commons, but the right hon. gentleman still retains his seat in Parliament. The legal heir to the Jemieson estate in Scotland, worth a million sterling, has been discovered in the person of a young man, a poor pedlar.

Two clerical scandals similar to the Beecher-Tilton case excite attention. The Rev. R. W. Glendinning, a Presbyterian minister in Jersey City, is charged with immoral relations with one of his congregation, and unchristian conduct. The pastor of the
Congregational Church, Baltimore, has been publicly accused of immorality on several specified occasions with female members of the church. An effort was made by the municipal officers of New York to ascertain accurately the City debt. They found some difficulty in estimating it to within a hundred and twenty millions of dollars. Charles Ross, uhe boy stolen by highwaymen, has not been recovered. Two burglars, shot dead while entering a houso, were proved to be two of Ross's abductors. Five chiidren were in a sleigh on the ice at New Jersey. The ice broke, and the children were drowned within view of their mother, who was standing helpless on the edge of the pond. New York, January 6th. The question of admitting Negro children into public schools in New Orleans has cul minated in beating one coloured man to death, and seriously injuring several coloured children. The suit by Josephine Mansfield, the woman who caused James Fisk's ruin and death, to recover 25,000 dollars, the promissory notes given by Fisk while under her spell, has resulted in favour of plaintiff. Statements of the condition of affairs in all manufactures and industries in New York show great stagnation in the building trade. Nearly 7000 men are idle. The shoemakers have 1000 men idle. The iron interests are very much depressed; nearly 6000 men are idle. Cabinet makers, 2580 idle ; over 2000 painters ; 2400 coopers ; sugar refiners, 700. The unskilled labourers idle, in round numbers amount to over 30,000, exclusive of several thousands out on strike. The sittings in Beecher's church were sold at auction, and realised 50,000 dol. premium. All old pew-owners took seats at higher premiums. The Rev. Coombes, a Presbyterian Minister of New York, committed suicide owing to fear of exposure, having been detected stealing books from a stall. It seemed he was suffering from kleptomania. General Cobb was shot in San Francisco by Mrs Smythe, who fancies he defrauded her. The General was shot in the back, but is in a fair way of recovery. In California the Great Bouanza mine has opened on fabulously rich ground. There is a body of almost silver and gold in the mine, which is selling at the rate of 10,000 dol. per inch. It is valued at 500,000,000 dol. Mr Grant resigns the presidentship. There has been another war in Vicksburg between the blacks and whites. The negroes attacked the town. Seventy-five negroes were killed. The Rev. Mr Beecher has won his first victory. Miss Proctor obtained damages against Moulton—loo,ooo dollars—for defamation of character. Chiarini has another circus in San Francisco.
