LAND APPLICATION.
To the Editor of the Cromwell Argus. Sir.—Fn your issue of last week I see an extract fiom the minutes of the Waste Land Board to the effect that Messrs (irant and Richards have applied for a special grant of twentyjcres of land adjoining the bridge, namely, ten acre} ou each side, but for what purpose is not specified. Now, what I want to know iswhy thij special grant has not been duly advertised in the local paper, as all other applications of this jlass have been. Or has this company got any ipccial privileges, not enjoyed by other?. My reastoi for asking this question is from the well kncwn fact that one of the present applicants seiured a freehold in the centre of t'lis goldfieldja short time as;o before anyone in the district was aware of it, a desideratum I am afraid Waste Land Board pets are only allowed to participate in. One matter I oinno* understand it),that the Board of Inquiry seom to think
3 thatthe coal seams m <M flofth side are of tm» 3 much value to sanction ttagraflt on that sid*. 3 Jt such is the case, I can asstlre y<m that the | gold on the south side is of much more impo,-. f tance to this district, and should any of the , members of the Inquiry Board make it their ! tt iHT ,n *H qwrter, I think f they will find my opinion reliable. Besides, the , grant of ten acres on the south side will effectually block up the only workable outlet in the place for the discharge of tailings from the lower end of Doctors Flat and the well known deep lead. Having the advantage of the Ooldfields Secretary living in our midst, I would suggest that the officers ol the Mining Association wait upon btm, and urge the necessity of having the grant delayed until «uch time as a searching inquiry has been made; for X am positive that gentleman knows the value of the outlet as well as anyone in the district. The granting of such large blocks of auriferous oountry indiscriminately will he the means of driving a self-sup-I porting glass of men from the district, Who have abated in placing Oiago in the proud position of being {*• WMlttuart Province in New Zealahd I am &c, A BAKNOCKBtTRN MtSttk December 19, 1874. [Our correspondent will see* that the application he refers to was granted at the last meeting of the Board.—Ed. C.A.]
