Cromwell Argus AND NORTHERN GOLD-FIELDS GAZETTE. Cromwell : Tuesday, November 17, 1874.
The Town Council held their adjourned regular meeting last night. Subjects of considerable importance Were on the board, .and we are sorry to have to hold over a report until next week. Two of the Councillors handed in their resignations,—Messrs Wright and Sbanly,—and the°nomination of Councillors in their stead has been fixed for Saturday next, as will be seen on reference to our advertising columns. The prizes in Starkey's sweep on tho Melbourne Cup were handed over to the winners yesterday afternoon. The lucky holder of Haricot was Mr Charles Johnson, of Cromwell; of Protos, Mrs Richards, of Bannockhrtrn ; and of The Diver, Mr Watson, of Bannockburn. Tn the list of winning numbers advertised last week, one or two typographical errors occurred. Goldsbrouah's number, instead of 75, should have been 77 ; and that of All Fours, instead of 155, shculd have been. 1.35. .

Two plays in oneiweek.are rather more than the Cromwell people' ego. be expected-t» support; but nevertheless the Oxford troupe succeeded in attracting two fair houses, on Friday and Saturday eveiiings. The tricks performed by Miss Anderson were cleverly done, and the ibsenoe of any of that stagey effect so common to such performers gives them a pleasing freshness.: The sinking of Madame Reid. though not of any very Tii'crh order, is enjoyable, and affords a pleasant break *fS ; the 0 v nigs;er singing. The thing was first' proposed we believe on Saturday morning, and during the afternoon jpne or two gentlemen canvassed the. town, and 'succeeded in obtaining some thirty subscribers to the object in view. As Mr Lindsay was going to leave the town next day, nodonger time, was afforded, and this result therefore speaks volumes for the estimation founded by Mr'Lindsay during his stay in Cromwtell. Supper was laid in the evening at Mr Starkey's Kawarau Hotel, and was Sat down to by twenty-six of Mi Lindsay's friends. An extremely pleasant evening was spent, the -affair passing off successfully. Mr Thomas Fergus, the District Engineer, was in the chair, and in a very happy speech, proposed the health of the guest of the evening. His expressions of esteem and respect for Mr Lindsay, and of hope for bis future success, were warmly responded to bv the assemblage. Mr Lindsay acknowledged the compliments of his friends in a very heartfelt manner, expressing his pride in receiving such a demonstration of their respect. Thereafter toast followed toast in quick succession, and when the company broke no, it was with every expression of goodwill to Mr Lindsay, and of pleasure in having had an opnr.rtunity of showing to him the esteem in which he was held. The submarine boat scheme for dredging the Molynenx, of which we heard so much some time ago, is at last in a fair way to get a trial. The Company have taken up a claim at Cornish Peach,. between the Bannockburn Bridge and Kawarail Gorge, a beach that acquired great renown in former davs as a rich depositary of the precious metal. The Company has an influential directory in Dunedin, and we limy therefore expect a persevering attempt to; prove the success of the scheme. 3000 shares ye; remain for disposal, of which 1000 were applied for in Dunedin in one day, and a few of the shares have been reserved for allotment in Cromwell, Mr James' Marshall is the local agent. The prospectus of the-company will be advertised in our columns probably next week. The Wat itself will arrive in Cromwell very shortly.
