The Macgregor has arrived at Auckland from Sydney, and brings Mr Thomas Russell and twenty-eight others for Auckland, and eighteen for San Francisco. Mr Russell has arranged, on behalf of NewZealand, with the New South Wales Government, to re-establish a mail service via San Francisco, the boats to call at Auckland each voyage both upwards and downwards. The Alhambra arrived at Hokitika on Friday, with later English news. Twenty-six horses have accepted for the Melbourne Gup, including Papapa and Lurline. Latjnoeston, October 24 Bird, the pedestrian, and two publicans have been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for conspiracy connected with getting up a foot-race. London, October 21.. There has been a severe hurricane, which caused a great disturbance amongst the shipping, and injuries to the railways and telegraphic lines. The German frigate Ancona forcibly levied an indemnity on the inhabitants of the Navigator Islands, for grievances complained of by German colonists. The balance of the Victorian four per cent, loan has beer withdrawn from the London money market. Bombay, October 22. The notorious rebel Nana Sahib, who played an important part in the 1857 mutiny, has been captured, and has been identified by the Maharajah of Scinde. He is now imprisoned, and has made confessions. New York, October 22. The American Government have sent the war steamer Tascatota to the Navigators, in
consequence of the action of the commander of the Ancuna.
Tuesday, 9.30 a.m. A woman named Hendrickson committed suicide on Saturday evening by jumping out at a high window from one of the Hospital wards. The jury found a verdict of temporary insanity. At the monthly meeting of the Education Board yesterday, the resignation of Mr Stuart Hawthorne as Eector of the High School, was accepted. A labourer named Card on met with a serious accident by a truck passing over him in the Chain Hills tunnel ; he was removed to the Hospital, and is severely cut and bruised. Twelve cases of sly-grog selling are coming before the R.M. Court to-day. The Lennox Castle, 98 days from London, arrived yesterday ; she brings sixteen passengers. The acceptances for the Canterbury Cup are Traitor, Wainui, Toi, Templeton, Hercules, Somnambula.
