At the inquest on the fire in Mrs Schmidt's premises in Rattray-street, the evidence showed pretty closely that the story about the man being hanging about the back-yard was a fabrication. There was no evidence pointing to any particular person as the incendiary, and the jury simply returned a verdict to the effect that the house was maliciously set on lire. A number of gentlemen have arrived from Australia to attend the sale of Mr G. M. Bell's Waimea herd of shorthorns. The American war steamer Swatarra arrived at the Bluff on Friday ; she has a crew of 200 men. She bungs a scientific party to take an observation of the transit of Venus, and goe3 to the Chatham Islands to land them.
An attempt to set fire to the Crown Hotel, Napier, was made on Friday. The constable on duty found a bundle of shavings and oiled rags burning under the billiard-room. The fire was..extinguished without damage.
