From New Caledonia come:! the news that at Oubatehe a man name! Bateman, late of New Zealand, shot the Commandant for trying I to elope with a girl, at one time a barmaid at the. Greyhound Hotel, Auckland, Avho lived with Bateman as his wife. It is expected that Bateman will get off with three months' imprisonment. The Commandant lived twenty-two hours after being shot. Letters have been found frrmi him, sending jipisou to the girl to give to ; Bateman.
