Old ' Scar-faced 'Charley' is said to be equal to any fifty men himself. His wonderful exploit at the fight on Lost River fully proves this. More than fifty shots were fired at him as he retreated, but he did not even get a scratch. When the firing first began, the four soldier? who were trying to disarm him fired at him at ..twenty paces, but not one of T.hem4uthini A The old warrior fired, and at the ■ first sfto'ti ,killed Private Thomas Harris; then, beginihg the mo3t astonishing series of Indian somersaults.an/l,acrobatic ( feats, he retreated tow,afds the'water, at the same time loading his gun. Volley after volley were fired aftor ih}m, but so quick and lightning-like were his.gyratioUs that mot a soldier coqld get accurate aim. Every once in a while, when he got his gun loaded, he would turn a back somersaultand shoot from under his f feg as he turned, and, .strange to say, he never missed. Although he had only fifty yardsto ; re,treat before he reached, the water, he fired four times, killing one man and wounding three. Reaching the river bank he plunged in and swam to the other side ; and, though the bullets ftvw after him thick and jfast, he never '.received a scratch."
