CROMWELL ATHENÆUM.

The Athenaeum Committee held a meeting on Thursday evening la9t, to open the tenders) for the erection- of the iiew Atheiueum. Three tenders were received. . It having been explained that there might probably be tenders to arrive by the mail which would be delivered in due course on Friday morning, it was resolved to adjourn the meeting till that time. The tenders uuoa the table (unopened) were'then sealed and left in the custody of the honorary secretary till the adjourned meeting. The next morning the Committee met, there being present: Mess™ Preshaw (chair), Kaird, MacKellar, Marsh, Taylor (\V.) t Starkey, Ool'cloiigh, Dawkins. and Jolly (secretary). The secretary reported that no further tenders had been received by him. The tenders were.then opened, and were from Messrs Stewart and Co., William Grant, and James Taylor. Stewart's tender for No. 1 contract was £l7lO 3s Sd, for No. 2 £1660 7s 6d ; W. Grant's for No. 1 was £1529. for No. 2 £1325 ; J. Taylor's for No. 1 was Nil, for No. 2 £1224 ss. \V. Grant's tender contained an offer to reduce his No. 2 amount by £26, if he were supplied with a, copy of the plana and specifications ; and J. Taylor's No. 2 tender contained | an offer (if certain deductions which were speci- : fie I were made upon the works) to complete the ! work for the sum of £IOB9 10s. AH the tenders [exceeded the amount provided for by the Com- | mittee for the erection of an Athenanim, and it j was therefore resolved to postpone the farther i consideration of the tenders till Saturday evening, when Mr Burwell, the architect, was ex- | pectcd to arrive in Cromwell. That gentleman, | however, did not arrive as was expected on Saturday, and the matter was further postponed. The Committee meet; as per advertisement, on this (Tuesday) evening, to again consider thu situation.
