AUSTRALIAN TELEGRAMS.
(From the Dunedin dailies.) Melbourne, December 24. The principal interest is at present centred in tire approaching cricket match on Friday. The English, cricketers since their arrival have been practising assiduously in the presence of admiring crowds,* including the Governor. The.Victorians have selected a very strong eighteen. They feel confident of making a good score against the Englishmen. Colonels Ward and Humphrey are the respective umpires. Interest is very great, and if the weather is line 200,000 (?) spectators will bo present during the match. It is intensely hot weather. Much damage has been done by bush fires. At speech day in the public schools tho Governor made a good speech on the subject of education. A young man named Crosslenson was murdered and burned near Sandhurst. The rate of discount is raised one per cent. ,T. P. Hartley, barrister and ex-solicitor for the Government, died suddenly. The Great Britain has arrived, 57 days out. She brings 700 passengers. The Rifle Association prizes were presented at the Town Hall, by the Governor, on the 19th. In presenting the New Zealand war medals, he paid a very high compliment to the recipients for their services. The will of the late A. Robertson, squatter,
was lately proved under £242,000. The Chines rioters, charged with committing assault, were fined £5 each. The Minister of Lands lately forfeited a number'of licensed squatters’ runs, on the ground of dummyism ; likewise several thousand acres of selected land. Valuable consignments of racing stock have been received at Melbourne and Sydney. A large number of drownings have occurred in the Yarra. Jarvis was hanged yesterday for the murder of Moggeridge. He confessed the justice of his sentence. Rochefort and 400 other exiles have arrived at New Caledonia. Bush fires have created destruction among sheep and crops in South Australia. Gosse, the explorer, has discovered a fine Country towards Westeru Australia.
