The Courier and Qucejislmuhr newspapers in Brisbane have been sold by auction for £13,056. The Gothenburg has arrived at Adelaide from Port Darwin with 200 passengers. A man at Yam Creek, Port Darwin, found thirty ounces of gold, and sold his claim immediately. There is great difficulty still in getting machinery to the reefs in the Northern Territory. The Melbourne bakers have succeeded in obtaining the eight-hours system. Ballarat has been declared a new Episcopal Diocese. Dr Perry goes home to select a bishop. Females are to be admitted to the Melbourne University. Their admission was opposed by the Anglican Bishop. A clerk in the Victorian Land Office has bolted—it is believed to New Zealand—with £IO,OOO of Government money. Don Juan won the Melbourne Cup by five lengths. He made the quickest time on record. Dagworth was second; Horatio, third ; Arrow, fourth; and Lothair, fifth. There were 50,000 people on the course on the Cup day. The bookmakers won largely. Joe Thompson has bought the Don for £2OOO. Thompson won £12,000. A Melbourne telegram dated Nov. 13, gives the following particulars regarding the Intercolonial rifle matches : —All the representatives have arrived for the rifle matches. The Auckland men arrived after the match commenced, and had therefore no opportunity of practice. All seem well pleased with the treatment they receive. They all mess together at the barracks in St. Kilda road, and receive free passes everywhere. On the first day Victoria won the Intercolonial small bore match with 37 points, against New South Wales. Sydney won the All-comers match. The Intercolonial military weapon match, 20 a side, competed for by Victoria, New South Wales, and New Zealand, was won by New South Wales by 05 points. The highest aggregate scorers for New Zealand at the three ranges were Small and Christie, with 85 point 3 each ; for Victoria, Whalley 89, Hannay 88. On the conclusion of the match, cheers were given for the different teams. Captain Goldie responded for New Zealand. At the 200 yards range New Zealand headed Victoria, but they fell off afterwards. The general matches commence to-day, in which all the representatives will compete. Walker has been chosen captain of the New Zealand team.
