There was a large attendance, including the Governor, Lady Fergusson, and suite, the Hon. Julius Vogel, the Hon. E. Richardson, and many visitors from Dunedin, Wellington, and Nelson. .. • Maiden Plate, of 100 sovs. Weight for age. Distance, one and a half miles. Mr Nosworthy’s b c Defamer, 3 yrs, by Traducer—Emmeline 1 Mr Webb’s ch c, 3 yrs, by Malton— Ada ... 2 Mr Redwood’s hr f Batter, 3 yrs, by Ravens-worth--Pancake 3 Defamer came up beautifully in the straight, and won a splendid race by two lengths.— Time, 2 min. 40 sec. Free Handicap, of 50 sovs., with sweep of 5 sovs. One mile. Mr Redwood’s Kakapo, 3 yrs, 6st lOlbs ... 1 Mr Nosworthy’s Hatred, aged. 9st 4ibs ... 2 Mr Campbell’s Exile, aged, 7st 121bs 3 Hatred was a hot favourite, and made the running, and kept a good lead half down the straight, when Kakapo came away and won by a neck.—Time, 1 min. 45 secs. Canterbury Cop, of 250 sovs., added to a sweepstakes of 15 sovs each. Two miles’ weight for age. Mr Nosworthy’s brm Lurline, 4 yrs 1 Mr Redwood’s ch c Papapa, 3 yrs, by Ravensworth—Waimea 2 Mr R. Ray’s b g Tambourini, 5 yrs 3 Mr Redwood’s b m Malvina, 4 yrs 0 Mr Delamaine’s b c Templeton, 3 yrs, by Traducer—Belle of the Isle 0 Captain Hutchison’s b c Earl of Lynne, 3 yrs 0 Traitor was scratched. Lurline was the favourite at even money, and made the running, leading all the way, winning by five lengths. Up to half-way Tambourini and Malvina looked dangerous ; Papapa running a good fourth. In the straight Malvina dropped out beaten, and Papapa took the second place. Papapa ran a grand race, but was very badly ridden, having to take up nearly a hundred yards in the straight, but could never catch the favourite.—Time, 4 rain. 9 secs. (The time last year, when Lurline also won, was 4 min. 12 secs., and the year before, when Peeress ran off the dead heat with Knottingly, 4 rain. 13 secs.) Railway Plate, of 50 sovs. Weight for age. Distance, half a mile. Mr Nosworthy’s b m Hatred, 6 yrs 1 Mr Redwood’s b f Paringa. 3 yrs, by Ravensworth—Countess 2 Mr Nosworthy’s ch tn Calumny, 4 yrs 3 Hatred was a strong favourite at evens, and made the running throughout, winning easily by three lengths, Calumny a fair third? The owner declared to win with Hatred.— Time, 49 secs. The fields of horses were small, but the racing was' the very best we have ever had here ; the race for the Cup being one of the fastest run in the colonies at weight for age. A challenge has been given for Papapa to run Lurline on Canterbury Cup terms. The general opinion is that Papapa was too lon<* held. Second Day.—Wednesday, November 12. Derby Stakes, of 150 sovs., added to a sweepstake of 10 sovs. each. Colts, Sst lOlbs ; fillies and geldings, Sst 51bs. Distance, one and a half miles. Mr Redwood’s ch c Papapa 1 Mr R. Campbell’s ch c Castaway, by Traducer—Mermaid 2 M r Delamaine’s b c Templeton 3 Papapa was the favourite. Papapa made the running, was never headed, and won by half a length. Defamer and Traitor were second and third for half-way.—Time, 2 min. 46 secs. Lottery Plate, of 50 sovs., added to a sweepstake of 5 sovs. Three quarters of a mile. Mr Nosworthy’s br m Lurline, 4 yrs 1 Mr S. Hainos’ bg No Gentleman, 4 yrs ... 2 Mr Nosworthv’s b m Hatred, 6 yrs ... ... 3 Mr Newitt’s br hj Phantom, 6 yrs 0 Nosworthy declared to win with Lurline, who was a hot favourite. After a quarter of a mile Lurline came away easily, winning, hard-held, by ten lengths.—Time, 1 min. 22 sees. Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, of 150 sovs., added to a sweepstake of 10 sovs. each. Distance, two miles. Mr Redwood’s br c Kakapo, 3 yrs, by Diomedes -Toitoi, 6st 51bs 1 Captain Hutchison’s Malabar, aged, 6st lOlbs 2 Mr Mallock’s ch m Gossip, 5 yrs, Bst 41bs ... 3 Tambourini and Captain Hutchison’s Mabel also ran. At the end of half a mile Tambourini went to the front, and held the lead until the straight. Kakapo, who had been hitherto the last, was let out, and won easily by half a dozen lengths. It was a very fast race. The weight told on Tambourini, who was beaten half a mile from home.—Time, 3 min. 44 secs. Grand Stand Handicap, of 100 sovs. Distance, one mile. Mr Nosworthy’s ch m Calumny, 4 yrs 1 Mr Redwood's br f Batter, 3 yrs 2 Mr Newitt’s br hj Phantom, 5 yrs 3 Calumny was a hot favourite, with 2 to 1 laid on her. She won by four lengths, with the greatest case.—Time, 1 min. 47£ secs. The attendance at the races was even larger than yesterday, and the racing was splendid. The weather was all that could be desired. Thesupporters of Lurline offered last night to accept the challenge to tun against Par _papa on Cup terms, but could not get on.
