MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

A mooting was held on Thursday evening, 23rd inst, in the Town-hall, Present: The Mayor (Mr J. Dawkins), and Crs. Grant, Hayes, Wright, and Shanly. Minutes of previous meetings were read and confirmed* INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. A. letter was received from the Government stating that £3oo.had been placed to the credit of the Corporation in the Bank of New Zealand, Cromwell. Cr. Grant moved, Cr. Wright seconded, and it was carried, " That the money to the eredit of the Corporation be transferred from the Bank of New Zealand to the Corporation Kink account in the Bank of New South Wales." RSPORT OF PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE. The following report, being No. 2, was then read:— "I. Iu the matter of permanent levels, it is desirable that a permanent start-point of level should be fixed by the contractor for the work «f taking the levels, and the committee would suggest one of the buttresses of the Bridge, from which all the streets intersecting Melmore-ter-race could be calculated. That the contractor shall furnish plans shewing the depth of excavation, or the depth of filling up at points of every chain ; and that the plans give the differences of levels (as from the start-point or unit of level above referred to) at the points of intersections •of all the streets required to be dealt with. The committee desire it to be' understood that the levels shall embrace all the streets bounding Blocks 1., If., HI., IV., XIII., XIV. "2. The committee recommend that the account of E. Lindsay, upon which they have been «aHerl upon to report, be passed for payment. _ "3. They have advised the immediate painting of the feucing, as the timber would be injured by even a short exposure. " The committee would recommend that the town-race be boxed from Hedlund's house to Hayes ami Co.'s dam, as the only way of keeping up a regular supply of water. "o. Wo are unable to furnish a report upon the abatement of the dnst nuisance, but the nutter is under consideration, and the committee toist urge that some decided steps be taken in the matter, otherwise it will be impossible to live in that part of the town, or even in the vicinity." - • It was resolved that the Public Works Committee consider the advisability, and report thereupon, of continuing the water race in boxes further along Inniscort-straet. On the motion of Cr. Wright, seconded by Cr. Grant, it was resolved, "That the re'commendution No. 4 of the said committee be adopted, and that tenders be invited for the work at once, to be carried out under the •direction of the said committee." Cr. Shanly proposed, " That Mr Sinythies be appointed Town Surveyor. That he be instructed to take the levels as recommended by the Public Works Committee, and that the remuneration be a fee ? equal to the j amount which Mr Siny tines tendered to com-1 plete the work for, and that he be'paid the! same upon giving in the necessary plans in | conformity with the requirements of the said I Committee." Seconded by Cr..Grant, and! carried. ACCOUNTS. E. Lindsay's account was passed for pav- j ment ; also W. Stewart's for contract No. 2, and John Marsh's (of 10s.) for conveyance of mails from Clyde. IMPOUNDISO. It was decided to forward to his Honor the Superintendent a telegram in re the impounding of cattle and horses by Mr nan. ° THE NEW MAYOR. The Town Clerk was instructed to forward a letter to the proper quarter at Wellington notifying the election of Mr James Dawkins as Mayor. ELECTION OF AUDITOR. It was decided to call for nominations once more for the post of auditor, and the dates of nomination and polling were fixed. A vote of thanks to the Mayor concluded the meeting.
