QUARTZ MINING MEMORANDA.
GARRICK RANGE. There is nothing particular to report from the Heart of Oak this week, except it be the I fact that the claim will in future be under | the supervision of Mr Samuel Williams, the | manager of the Star of the East. The Oak j company will, at any rate, enjoy the benefit jof immensely superior direction to that j winch it has lately possessed, i Tne Star of the Bast company commenced crushing last Monday morning, but were unfortunately compelled to stop for a few days, on account of a breakage taking place in one of the joints of the new heater lately added to the machine. They are now crushing. They have a heap of stone lying in the millpaddock of 250 tons. The reef discovered ; U 1 the shaft sunk in the main drive still coui tinlles to improve in general appearance. It j is .about three feet thick, and has every indi- , cation of being a permanent reef ; it prosS b oc^s we h and is nearly perpendicular. I Cameron anil party are pushing on the lower level. The Elizabeth company have nothing new to report from the mine this week. "They have secured the services of Mr R. Hawkes (late manager of the Goldougb Co. at Bendigo) as manager of the machine. As an increased Quantity of stone is being passed through the mill in consequence of the heavier stamps how in use, a larger yield may he 1 ookeel f< >i' at ilext was!i inor-which as nsu:il will be about the end of the month. The John Bull company have about 150 tons at grass, and covild have more if arrange* luents could be made tor crushing. They expect, however, to be able to stavc'cruslunh within the next fortnight. They have fivo men at work just now, and intend putting more on when the crushing begins. Tlie Caledonian, the Young Australian, the Royal Standard, and Hancock and party (tho Try Again Go.), arc all busy at work, sinking ami driving, A road is being made also to too Vale of Avoca claim, to give it another trial this summer-.
i The road to Carrickton, and especially the j upper portion of the road from Quartzville to Carrickton, which, for distinction sake, may he called the main road, is in a very bad state at present, rendering the carriage np and down of coals, quartz, bee., almost impossible. Tiie portions of the road which were lately repaired under the direction of the is tract Engineer, are indeed the only portions which can be described as at all doccnh i l wo men are now at work about half way between Quartzville and Carrickton ; bub two men are quite insufficient to overtake all that requires to be dune. If the main road ms bad, however, the branch roads to the I various claims arc simply horrible; that from | 'warnold,on to the Elizabeth, Star, and Oak {chilli's being about three feet deep in mud. I i he wonder is that the companies can per- ! suado any sane man to carry coals or quartz : to their machines at all. I ii E IST I) I o O. I The Aurora company, as reported last I iveek. did retort on Tuesday, with a result ' however, a little larger than had been anticr pated. The quantity crushed was [MI tons, land the result was a cake a little, over lt!M i ounces. It will be remembered that only | 1(0 oune-'s were expected from jb;t tons, i lie smlrehoiders on this occasion—the first for a long time—rejoiced in a dividend. The Cromwell company did not retort till Wednesday, in c ms -qu nme of the bad weather which prevailed on Monday and Tuosda\. ibasu week we reported that MoO ounces wei-e expected, but the result in this ease was beyond that, for if t’rcm' 1 out ounces. The company are again crushing on the same kind of stuil’. Ibe Lucknow com pan y have cut through th ■ lea ler reported la d week, and are continuing the drive in the direction of the tn,in reef, which they hope to cut shortly. Tim rock continues verv hard. Work has not vet been be nn in the old .'bailing Star claim. —in future to be known as the Ledance (j. iM. Co; s claim, —but wo uudci stand it wall oe very soon. Erom the splendid results lately obtained by the Cromwell company, this eoiiipauv’s prospects a. O v.ry highly thought of.- Guo eighth share in it was recently disposed of soomtiiinsf about x’WV.O«
