LAKE WANAKA REGATTA.
(FROM A COItIIESPONDENT.) The above Regatta, held on the 23rd and 24th May, was unfortunately not so successful as the handsome am Hints of the prizes offered would have warranted one in expecting. The absence of several parties owning boats on the Lake rendered it necessary on the part of the Committee to alter the advertised pro gramme to suit the meeting of competitors. Grave fears at one time prevailed that the affair would prove a failure ; but this was happily averted, and, wider the untoward circumstances, the promoters are to be congratulated on the measure of success, small though it was by comparison with what it should have been, which attended it. FIRST DAY : FRIDAY. Sailing Back.—Distance, 0 miles. First prize, L.15 ; second, L.l 10s. Eureka Co's Eureka. 40 tons ... 1 Mi Graham's Agnes Muir, 3 tons 2 Mr ltussell's Dart, o tons 3
At the time of starting, it was V»;o« mg a gale from the west, with dirty squalls ; and lever was weather better fitted to try the nettle of the three boats and crews. The Eureka, a sudden squall striking her from the mu’-west, and having the outside position, united in-shore, and nearly ended the race by putting all on land. But close shaving, and the good management of the small boats, brought all clear out into the Bay against a heavy sea. Then the Eureka (owing to her superior tonnage) took the lead, and held it throughout the race. The Agnes Muir and the Dart had a hard tussle for second honours, mlv a few yards separating them at the winning post. Two-Oared Each.—Distance, 2 miles. Brize, L.4. Mr 0. Mason’s Makarova 1 Mr T. Russell's Fireilash 2 Mr \V. Ebaoott’s Rronzewing 3 This was a well-contested event between the two first boats. The Bronzewing was nowhere. Dingey Race. —Distance, 1 mile. Four-Oared Wh.veer iat Race. —Distance, 4 miles. First, prize, U. 7 ; second, L. 1. MrT. Farquhar’s crow, in Makarova 1 Mr W. Eliacott’s crew, in ditto 2 As only one boat put in an appearance, the two crews agreed to pull against time. There was some very hard “slogging” in this race, but of course no excitement to spectators. Farquhar’s crew succeeded in winning by a minute and a half. Time, 37 minutes, Two-Oared Race.— Distance, 2 miles. Prize, L.3. MrT. Russell’s Fireflash 1 Mr U. Mason’s MaUarora - Mr P. Bayne’s Brim rowing • A false start was made in this race. Tvvc of the boats pulled a mile, and then had t< come back and start afresh, which had tlu efleet of knocking-up one of the crow of tlu Makarova. The Bronzewing being completely out of the race in the first mile, an easy victory was thus left to the Fireflash. Handicap Dingey Race. —Distance, one mile, First prize, L2 ; second, L. I. MrT. Russell’s Fireilash 1 Mr (b Mason’s Miss Mason * Six dingeys started, and what with cutting out and finding at the buoys, this proved tin most amusing event of the Regatta.
