Comparisons, says a Nelson contemporary, even when they appear odious, may be useful, and the following tabular statement of the taxation of the various British Colonies ought to come upon some of our readers with the force of a new sensation:—
These figures prove that the taxation of New Zealand is higher than that of any other civilised nation on the face of the earth, and certainly more than enough for the value received. Our friends in the other colonies have much cause to be thankful that, in the matter of taxes at least, they are not like the poor public of New Zealand.
