MR CROMBIE IN EXPLANATION.
To the Editor of the Cromwell Argus. Sir, —In the leading article of your paper of April 1, lam called upon to verify certain statements made by Mr Alexander. In justice to the Chairman of Conference and myself, I must say my motion was carried ; and, as far as ray abilities go, I shall endeavour to give an explanation. On Friday, December 6, Mr Alexander brought forward his motion, on which a discussion ensued. A majority of the members not being prepared to vote on a question of so much importance without knowing the opinion of their districts, allowed the motion to bo brought forward on the 7th, with the addition that it be left to be dealt with by the various local Assoeiotions. As for myself, I consider Mr Alexander’s motion only a suggestion, not in any way the absolute opinion of the Mining Conference. Hoping that this will be deemed satisfactory, I am, &c., J. Crombie. Bannockburn, April 5, 1873.
