CARDRONA.

(From our oicn Correspondent ) March *2B. 187.1 The relaxation afforded to the miners of this locality by the advent of St. Patrick’s Day, and its celebration, lias evidently imparted fresh energy to our little army of gold-seekers, for (to borrow a phrase from the lawyers) “ each and every of them” is at work again as busy as a bee in a bed of blue-bolls. The neighbourhood of the township presents a different aspect to that of most others, inasmuch as the principal workings are situate within a short distance of the business centre, and the mechanical music of picks and shovels, sluice-forks and wheelbarrows, pumps and waterwheels, is heard in the streets all the livelong day. The township itself has undergone a wonderful degree of improvement within the last few months. Old buildings have been en larged, altered, and transmogrified to such an extent as to he hardly recognisable; whilst a number of new structures have sprung up all around. At Butcher's Flat, three quarters of a mile below the main township, the march of civilisation is particularly noticeable. Here Messrs M‘Dougall and Smith have built and opened a branch store ; and Mr Cotter has a store and butcher’s shop immediately opposite. A bakery and a boarding house are in course of erection close by, both of which establishments will shortly be opened by Mr Callagher, late o: Arrowtown. The boarding-house will supply a want which lias been long felt, and will no doubt be largely patronised by unmarried miners working in the vicinity. Many new and comfortable domiciles—the abodes of prosperity and contentment—may also be seen ! in the sir.nu locality, la Cardroua proper,

the first prominent building on the west a *** of the street is the Empire Hotel, which jj scnts in every way a very marked impro •-*- ment upon the old premises of the same nai A Mr Bond has also added a very supej range of stabling on the opposite side of street. Facing the Empire Hotel, Mr ]\ noW chinson has built and opened a general at —an off-shoot of his well-known establishmi The at Bendigo. Adjoining the Empire is Mr C the ter’s store, —and the principal depot of Mcs Lor* M'Dougall and Smith ; and on the same si as ] the Royal Mail Hotel, now the property Ens Mr .lames Torrie, who has also a stores eno butchery under the same roof. Mr M‘Grat met hotel—the Golden Age—has grown in pj pud portion to the increased requirements of t we township, and the enterprising landlord jn 1 now making extensive additions to the stall odd attached to the hotel. The Bank of Ota get! is a neat structure, admirably adapted f or I the purpose for which it was built. The a nig’ vantages accruing from the establishmen, of aroi agency here are very generallyaap t hbr The prospect of securing more rapid coil Inc: munication with Cromwell by the short roinß the over Mount Pisa is engrossing much atteH car tion, and it is hoped that no unnecesa® was delay will occur in the formation of the traclH wai Next week I will endeavour to supply y O 9 sea readers with some information on ininiJß Fr< matters in this locality.
